So we're watching Little Dorrit

(one bloody Netflix at a time), and it's at an especially suspenseful scene, and my 13 y/o sister turns to me, eyes wide. "What happens?"

"How should I know?" I hiss, without moving my gaze from the screen.

"What?" she cries. "You haven't read the book?"

"No! Be quiet."

"You haven't read it?" she repeats, her expression filled with incredulous reproach. "Why didn't you read the book? I can't believe you didn't read the book!"

"Shut up!" I say. "Just watch and you'll find out what happens, like kids do in normal non-literate families."

I missed the last two episodes when they were airing on PBS here. I figured I'd just borrow the DVD once our library bought it. Davies did an excellent job with the adaptation, but for a few things I didn't like... that said, I still haven't read the book - like you (I know shocking!) But it's on my list, maybe not this year, but next year for sure. We'll see A Tale Of Two Cities was on the list first...

Your sister's comments and your replies cracked me up.

I know, Davies is what, a genius? Some of his angles are so fresh and stunning (spoken by a girl who films movies with her cousins, using the same three angles ... close up, pan, and head space) ... but our favorite part with Dickens, with such a wide cast, is seeing a new character arrive, and shouting, "Oh! What's he/she on!?!?" And then pinpointing their previous BBC appearances.

"Little Dorrit" is one of my favorite books. I got my mom to watch the miniseries with me, and it was fun to have her asking "What happens? What happens??" . . . and not tell her. ;-)

I'm planning on reading Little Dorrit someday, Gina ... I'm planning on reading ALL of Dickens someday. 6 down, 17 to go. :)

You're welcome, Hope. Glad to share a good story. (It WAS the right book, wasn't it? Because I didn't open the package when it arrived, just slapped a new label over the old one, all the while thinking, "what if it's not North and South inside this envelope?!? :)
